How to Fix MacBook Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Problems

Wi-Fi keeps dropping or your AirPods won't connect? These step-by-step fixes solve most MacBook Wi-Fi and Bluetooth problems without a repair.

Tip #32 of 35 Software & Security 6 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

A MacBook that keeps dropping Wi-Fi or refuses to connect to your mouse or AirPods can grind your day to a halt. Most of the time, the cause is a router hiccup, a corrupted network setting or a software glitch, all of which you can fix yourself. This guide covers the most effective fixes for MacBook Wi-Fi problems and Bluetooth issues, plus the signs that point to a hardware fault.

First, rule out the network

Before changing anything on your Mac, check whether the problem is the Mac or the connection.

  1. See if other devices, like your phone, can use the same Wi-Fi network normally.
  2. If everything is slow or offline, restart your modem and router: unplug them, wait about 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
  3. Try your MacBook on a different network, such as a phone hotspot. If it works fine there, the issue is likely your router, not the Mac.

Fix MacBook Wi-Fi problems

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and on. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar or Control Centre and toggle it.
  2. Restart the Mac. Choose Apple menu > Restart. It clears many temporary networking glitches.
  3. Forget and rejoin the network. On macOS Ventura and later, go to System Settings > Wi-Fi, click Details next to your network, then Forget This Network. On older versions, open System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced, select the network and remove it. Then reconnect with your password.
  4. Run Wireless Diagnostics. Hold the Option key, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Follow the prompts; it can point out interference or configuration issues.
  5. Check VPN and security software. A VPN, firewall or content filter can block connections. Temporarily disable it to test.
  6. Update macOS. Updates often include networking fixes. Back up first, as explained in how to update macOS safely.

Fix MacBook Bluetooth problems

  1. Check the device. Make sure your mouse, keyboard or headphones are charged and in pairing mode.
  2. Toggle Bluetooth. Turn it off and on in Control Centre or in System Settings > Bluetooth (older: System Preferences > Bluetooth).
  3. Remove and re-pair the device. In Bluetooth settings, find the device, click the info button or right-click it, choose Forget This Device or Remove, then pair it again.
  4. Restart the Bluetooth service. Open Terminal, type sudo pkill bluetoothd, press Return and enter your password. Bluetooth restarts on its own.
  5. Reduce interference. USB 3 hubs, some docks and crowded wireless environments can interfere with Bluetooth. Move the hub away or try the device closer to the Mac.

Try Safe Mode to isolate software

If problems continue, start in Safe Mode, which loads only essential software. If Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in Safe Mode, a third-party app or extension is probably to blame. Our guide on starting a MacBook in Safe Mode explains the steps for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Signs of a hardware problem

Software fixes won't help if the wireless hardware itself is damaged. Watch for:

  • Wi-Fi says "No hardware installed" or the Wi-Fi option disappears entirely
  • Very weak signal right next to the router, while other devices are fine
  • Problems that began after a drop, a spill or a screen repair, since antenna cables often run through the display hinge
  • Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth failing at the same time on all networks

When to get it checked in Ottawa

If you've tried these steps and your MacBook still won't connect reliably, it may need an antenna, cable or board-level repair. Quick answers

Why does my MacBook keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?

Common causes include router issues, a corrupted saved network, VPN or security software, and outdated macOS. Forgetting and rejoining the network fixes many cases.

What does "No hardware installed" mean for Wi-Fi?

It means macOS can't detect the Wi-Fi hardware. If a restart doesn't fix it, it usually points to a hardware or logic board fault.

How do I reset Bluetooth on a newer Mac?

Remove and re-pair the device, or restart the Bluetooth service by running sudo pkill bluetoothd in Terminal.
