macOS updates bring security fixes, new features and bug fixes, so keeping your MacBook current is important. But a rushed upgrade can leave you with incompatible apps, a full drive or, in rare cases, a Mac that won't finish starting up. Learning how to update macOS safely takes only a few extra minutes. Here's the checklist we recommend before every update.
Step 1: Back up your MacBook first
Most updates go smoothly, but the one that doesn't is the one you'll remember. Before any update, especially a major version upgrade, make a full backup.
- Connect an external drive and run a Time Machine backup.
- Make sure important files are also in iCloud Drive or another cloud service if you use one.
- Check that the backup actually finished before you continue.
Our guide on backing up a MacBook with Time Machine and iCloud covers the full process.
Step 2: Check compatibility
- Your Mac: Apple publishes a list of supported models for each macOS version. If your MacBook isn't listed, Software Update won't offer that version.
- Your apps: Check with the makers of apps you depend on for work, such as accounting, design or audio software, plus printer and scanner drivers. Some developers need a little time to update after a new macOS release.
- Your timing: If your MacBook is essential for work, there's no harm in waiting a few weeks after a major release for early bug-fix updates. Security updates for your current version are worth installing promptly.
Step 3: Free up storage space
Major macOS upgrades need a lot of free space to download and install, and a nearly full drive is one of the most common reasons updates fail or stall. Check your space in System Settings > General > Storage (or Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage on older versions). If space is tight, see our guide on how to free up storage space on a MacBook.
Step 4: Run the update
- Plug in the charger and keep it connected throughout.
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi, ideally at home or work rather than public Wi-Fi.
- Open Software Update: on macOS Ventura and later, go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. On older versions, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update.
- Choose the update and click Update Now or Upgrade Now, then enter your password.
- Be patient. The Mac may restart several times and show a progress bar or a black screen for a while. Don't close the lid or hold the power button unless it has clearly been stuck for a very long time.
Step 5: After the update
- Open your most important apps and confirm they work.
- Check for app updates in the App Store and from other developers.
- Expect the Mac to feel a bit busy for a day or so while it re-indexes files for Spotlight and Photos.
- Re-check privacy and security permissions if apps ask for them again.
