MacBook Speakers Crackling or No Sound? How to Fix It

Crackling, buzzing or no sound at all? Work through these quick checks to tell a software glitch from a speaker that needs replacing.

Tip #31 of 35 Repair Advice 5 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

Few things are more annoying than a MacBook that crackles during a video call or goes completely silent halfway through a song. The good news is that many sound problems are caused by settings or software rather than broken hardware. This guide walks you through the checks to do when your MacBook speakers are crackling or have no sound, and how to tell when it's time for a speaker replacement.

Step 1: Check the basic sound settings

  1. Press the volume up key and make sure the Mac isn't muted.
  2. Open System Settings > Sound on macOS Ventura and later, or System Preferences > Sound on older versions.
  3. Under Output, select MacBook Pro Speakers or MacBook Air Speakers. If sound is going to Bluetooth headphones, an external display or an AirPlay device, your built-in speakers will stay quiet.
  4. Check the balance slider is centred.
  5. Try a different app. If sound works in Music but not in a browser tab or meeting app, the problem is that app's own settings.

Step 2: Restart and reset the sound system

Audio glitches often clear with a simple restart. Choose Apple menu > Restart, then test again.

If you'd rather not restart, you can restart macOS's audio process from Terminal:

  1. Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities.
  2. Type sudo killall coreaudiod and press Return.
  3. Enter your password when asked. The audio system restarts automatically within a few seconds.

Step 3: Figure out if it's software or hardware

A few simple tests narrow it down:

  • Try headphones. If sound is clean through headphones but crackles through the speakers, the speakers themselves are a likely culprit.
  • Lower the volume. Crackling that only appears at higher volumes is a classic sign of a damaged speaker.
  • Check one side at a time. Move the balance slider fully left, then fully right. If only one side crackles, that speaker is probably faulty.
  • Try Safe Mode. If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, a third-party app or audio plug-in may be responsible. Our guide on starting a MacBook in Safe Mode shows how on Apple silicon and Intel.
  • Update macOS. Software updates sometimes fix audio bugs. Back up first, as explained in how to update macOS safely.

Common hardware causes

If the software checks don't help, the issue is likely physical:

  • Worn or blown speakers: years of loud playback can damage the speaker membrane, causing buzzing or rattling.
  • Liquid exposure: even a small spill near the keyboard can reach the speakers and cause distortion or silence.
  • Debris: dust and lint in the speaker grilles can muffle sound. Gently brush the grilles with a soft, dry brush. Don't push anything sharp into them.
  • Logic board audio faults: if there's no sound from speakers or headphones, and no output device appears in settings, the issue may be on the board itself.

Avoid making it worse

  • Don't keep playing audio at full volume through a crackling speaker; it can worsen the damage.
  • Don't use compressed air at close range into the grilles.
  • Don't spray cleaner near the keyboard or speaker openings.

Quick answers

Why do my MacBook speakers crackle at high volume?

Crackling that only happens at higher volume is often a sign of a worn or damaged speaker, especially if headphones sound clean.

Why is there no sound from my MacBook speakers?

Check that the Mac isn't muted and that the built-in speakers are selected under Output in Sound settings. Audio is often routed to Bluetooth or an external display.

Can MacBook speakers be replaced?

Yes. Faulty speakers can be replaced, and if the fault is on the logic board, it can often be repaired at board level.
