Carrying Your MacBook Safely: Tips for Students and Commuters

Bus rides, bike racks and packed backpacks are tough on a MacBook. These simple habits help students and commuters avoid the most common damage.

Tip #35 of 35 Care & Maintenance 5 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

Between classes, the bus and the office, a MacBook gets carried, squeezed and bumped far more than it's used on a desk. Most of the cracked screens, bent cases and dead batteries we see come from everyday travel habits rather than big accidents. These tips will help you carry your MacBook safely, whether you're a student heading to campus or commuting across town every day.

Choose the right bag and sleeve

  • Use a padded compartment. A dedicated laptop sleeve or a backpack with a padded laptop section protects against bumps and drops.
  • Pick a snug fit. A sleeve that's too large lets the Mac slide around and hit the bottom of the bag.
  • Keep heavy things separate. Textbooks, water bottles and chargers pressing against the lid can crack the screen. The display is the most vulnerable part of a closed MacBook.
  • Don't over-stuff the bag. Squeezing a full backpack under a seat or into a locker puts pressure on the lid.

Close it properly before you move

  1. Check nothing is on the keyboard. A pen, earbuds or a paper clip left on the keyboard can crack the screen when you close the lid.
  2. Skip thick keyboard and webcam covers. They can press against the display when it's closed. Read more in our guide on screen damage from closing the lid.
  3. Close the lid from the centre, not by one corner, to avoid twisting the display.
  4. Let it sleep fully. Closing the lid usually puts the Mac to sleep, but some apps or a connected display can keep it awake. If it's still warm in your bag, it may still be running. Shut it down for long trips.

Protect it from spills and weather

  • Keep drinks in a separate pocket or a sealed bottle. A leaking coffee cup in a backpack is a very common cause of liquid damage.
  • In rain or snow, use a water-resistant bag and wipe off melting snow before opening it.
  • In cold weather, let your MacBook warm up to room temperature before opening and using it to reduce condensation risk. See our guide on protecting your MacBook in winter.
  • Never leave your MacBook in a car on very cold or very hot days.

If a spill does happen, shut the Mac down immediately and don't put it in rice. Get it checked as soon as possible.

Take care of the charger too

  • Wrap cables loosely; tight wraps around the power adapter strain the ends.
  • Unplug by pulling the plug, not the cable.
  • Store the charger in a separate pocket so it doesn't press against the lid.

Protect your data, not just the hardware

  1. Turn on Find My Mac in System Settings by clicking your name, then iCloud (older macOS: System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud).
  2. Use a strong login password and set the Mac to require it after sleep.
  3. Back up regularly with Time Machine or iCloud, so a lost or broken laptop doesn't mean lost assignments.
  4. Never leave it unattended in a library or café, even for a minute.

Quick answers

Is it safe to put a MacBook in a backpack while it's on?

It's best to let it sleep or shut it down first. A Mac that stays awake in a closed bag can get hot and drain its battery.

What's the most common damage from carrying a MacBook?

Cracked screens from pressure on the lid, often caused by objects left on the keyboard or heavy items pressing on the bag, along with spills from drinks.

Should I use a keyboard cover when travelling?

Thick keyboard covers can press against the screen when the lid is closed, so it's safer to skip them and use a good sleeve instead.
