Many people buy keyboard covers, webcam covers and screen protectors to protect their MacBook, only to find a crack or pressure marks on the display a few weeks later. MacBook screen damage from closing the lid is surprisingly common, and it's usually caused by something sitting between the screen and the keyboard. Here's why it happens and how to protect your display without putting it at risk.
Why MacBook screens are so sensitive to pressure
MacBooks are designed with a very small gap between the display and the keyboard when the lid is closed. The screen itself is thin, and the panel behind the glass is fragile. Anything extra in that gap, even something that seems thin, can press against the display. Over time, or with pressure on the lid in a backpack, that can lead to cracks, lines or bright spots.
Webcam covers
Apple specifically warns against closing a Mac notebook with a camera cover installed if the cover is thicker than 0.1 mm, which is about the thickness of a sheet of printer paper. Most stick-on sliders are much thicker than that. Closing the lid can put pressure on the glass right around the camera and crack the display.
Safer options include:
- Rely on the camera indicator light. On MacBooks, the green light next to the camera turns on whenever the camera is active.
- Control camera permissions. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera (or System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera on older versions) and turn off access for apps that don't need it.
- Use a removable cover only while working, and take it off before closing the lid.
Keyboard covers and screen protectors
Silicone keyboard covers seem harmless, but they add thickness exactly where the screen rests. They can push against the display and leave marks from the keys, and on some models they can affect heat and the anti-reflective coating. Thick screen protectors and palm-rest skins cause similar issues.
- If you use a keyboard cover, remove it before closing the lid.
- Avoid thick screen protectors on the display.
- Remove any tape, stickers or adhesive pieces near the edges of the keyboard area.
Repeated contact with the keys can also wear the screen's coating. Learn more in our guide on MacBook screen coating peeling.
Small objects that crack screens
A pen, earbud, paper clip, USB stick or even a crumb left on the keyboard can crack a screen when the lid closes, especially if the bag is squeezed afterward. Before closing your MacBook:
- Glance at the keyboard and palm rests.
- Close the lid gently from the centre of the top edge, not one corner.
- Don't stack books or heavy items on the closed MacBook.
- Carry it in a padded sleeve so pressure from the outside is spread out.
Cleaning without damaging the display
Keeping the screen and keyboard clean also helps, since grit can scratch the display. Use a soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth and never spray liquid on the screen or use window cleaner. See our guide on how to clean a MacBook screen safely.
