Should You Repair or Replace Your MacBook? How to Decide

A cracked screen or tired battery doesn't always mean a new Mac. Use these questions to decide whether repairing or replacing your MacBook makes more sense.

Tip #26 of 35 Repair Advice 5 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

When your MacBook starts acting up, it's tempting to assume the answer is a brand-new machine. Sometimes it is. But many MacBooks are retired with problems that a single repair would solve, like a worn-out battery or a cracked display. This guide gives you a simple framework to decide whether to repair or replace your MacBook, so you spend money where it actually makes a difference.

Start with the problem, not the age

Some faults are routine and affordable relative to the value of the Mac; others are a sign of bigger trouble. Common repairs that often make sense on a Mac you otherwise like:

  • Battery replacement: batteries are consumable. If the Mac runs out of power quickly only because the battery is worn, a new one can make it feel like new.
  • Screen replacement: cracked or flickering displays are usually fixable.
  • Keyboard or trackpad faults: sticky keys or a dead click can be repaired.
  • Storage problems: on models with removable storage, an SSD upgrade can breathe new life into an older Mac.

Liquid damage and logic board faults are less predictable. They're frequently repairable at board level, but the outcome depends on how far corrosion has spread.

Five questions to ask before deciding

  1. Does it still get macOS updates? Check which version you're running from the Apple menu > About This Mac. A Mac that no longer receives security updates is a weaker candidate for an expensive repair. See our guide to finding your MacBook model and year if you're unsure what you have.
  2. Is it fast enough for what you do? If it handled your work fine before the fault, it will likely do so again after a repair. Slowness alone is often a storage or software issue rather than a reason to replace.
  3. How does the repair cost compare to the Mac's value? Get a real quote, then compare it to what a comparable replacement would cost you. A repair that's a fraction of the replacement price is usually worth it.
  4. Are other parts close to failing? A Mac with a worn battery, a failing keyboard and a damaged screen may add up to more than it's worth.
  5. What about your data? If you don't have a recent backup, repairing first may be the safest way to get your files back, even if you replace the Mac afterwards.

When repairing usually wins

  • The Mac is still supported by current macOS and meets your performance needs.
  • The fault is a single, well-defined issue like a battery, screen, keyboard or charging port.
  • You've invested in a higher-spec model with more memory or storage than a budget replacement would give you.
  • You want to keep a working machine out of the landfill.

When replacing makes more sense

  • The Mac no longer receives macOS security updates and you rely on it for banking or work.
  • Several major components are failing at the same time.
  • Your needs have outgrown it. For example, it has too little memory, and memory on most modern MacBooks can't be upgraded.
  • A repair quote comes close to the cost of a suitable replacement.

If you do replace it, don't forget to wipe the old one properly. Our guide on erasing a MacBook before selling it explains how.

Quick answers

Is it worth fixing an old MacBook?

Often, yes, if it still gets macOS updates, meets your needs, and the repair costs well under the price of a suitable replacement.

Can I upgrade the memory instead of replacing my MacBook?

On most modern MacBooks, memory is built into the logic board or chip and can't be upgraded, so plan your memory needs when buying.

How much does a MacBook diagnosis cost?

At Fix Revolution the quote is free and diagnostics are free if you go ahead with the repair. Otherwise a $29 diagnostic, pick-up and delivery fee applies.
