How to Check MacBook Battery Health & What "Service Recommended" Means

Find your MacBook's battery condition, maximum capacity and cycle count in a few clicks, and learn what "Service Recommended" means for you.

Tip #01 of 35 Battery & Charging 5 min read By the Fix Revolution technicians

Is your MacBook dying faster than it used to, or did a "Service Recommended" warning suddenly appear in the battery menu? Before you panic or buy a new laptop, take two minutes to check MacBook battery health. In this guide you'll learn where macOS shows battery condition, how to find your cycle count, and what each status actually means.

Check battery condition in System Settings

Apple shows a simple battery status right in macOS. The steps depend on your version:

macOS Ventura and later

  1. Click the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select Battery in the sidebar.
  3. Next to Battery Health, you'll see a status such as "Normal." Click the info button (the small "i") to see more detail, including Maximum Capacity on supported models.

macOS Big Sur and Monterey

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  2. Click Battery, then select Battery in the sidebar.
  3. Click the Battery Health button to see the condition and, on Monterey, the maximum capacity.

On older versions of macOS, you can hold the Option key and click the battery icon in the menu bar to see the battery condition.

Find your battery cycle count

A charge cycle is counted each time you use the equivalent of 100% of the battery's capacity, even if that happens over several partial charges. Most modern MacBooks are designed to retain a good share of their original capacity up to about 1,000 cycles. To check yours:

  1. Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu.
  2. Choose System Information.
  3. In the sidebar under Hardware, click Power.
  4. Look for Cycle Count and Condition under Battery Information.

A high cycle count on its own isn't a problem. It's the combination of cycle count, maximum capacity and how the Mac behaves day to day that tells the real story.

What the battery status messages mean

  • Normal: the battery is working as expected. Capacity naturally drops over time, so some reduction in runtime is normal.
  • Service Recommended: the battery holds noticeably less charge than when new, or macOS has detected that it isn't working as expected. The Mac is safe to use, but you'll likely see shorter battery life and, on some models, unexpected shutdowns at low charge.
  • Older wording: earlier macOS versions used "Replace Soon," "Replace Now" and "Service Battery." These mean much the same thing as Service Recommended, with increasing urgency.

If the status recently changed, restart your Mac and check again. Occasionally the reading updates after a restart or a full charge.

Signs your battery needs attention now

Some symptoms go beyond normal ageing and shouldn't wait:

  • The trackpad no longer clicks properly, or the case or keyboard looks raised or uneven.
  • The MacBook shuts down suddenly at 20 to 40% charge.
  • It only works while plugged in.
  • The battery percentage jumps around or gets stuck.

A trackpad that stops clicking or a bulging case can mean the battery is swelling. Stop using and charging the Mac and read our guide on swollen MacBook battery signs. Never puncture or try to press down a swollen battery.

If your battery is still healthy, a few simple settings can help it stay that way. See our tips to extend MacBook battery life.

Quick answers

Is it safe to keep using a MacBook with "Service Recommended"?

Usually yes, as long as the case isn't bulging and the Mac isn't shutting down unexpectedly. Expect shorter battery life and plan a replacement soon.

What is a good cycle count for a MacBook battery?

Most modern MacBooks are designed for about 1,000 cycles. Below that, the battery should generally still be in decent shape unless it shows other problems.

Does checking battery health require any app?

No. macOS shows battery condition in System Settings (or System Preferences) and the cycle count in System Information.
